How to Make an Origami Gift Box (Intermediate)

Tiffany & Co. - 2010 Christmas commercial

Tiffany & Co gift box.

On this blog post I have tried to recreate the Tiffany gift box by using origami techniques. I learnt how to make the origami gift box from watching a tutorial on Youtube. I will post the link on another blog post.

This is the Tiffany gift box.

Here is the origami gift box that I made using a magazine page.

Fund raising

Our fashion show for college is getting closer and closer as the days goes by and I need to raise some money for the show. So I was thinking of what to do to raise some money. Siri, Kathryn and I discussed things that we could do to raise money and Siri came up with and amazing idea that we could do, crochet flowers. We have decided that we're going to make this because Siri has already learnt how to crochet some flowers so we do not have a problem, then we also discussed who is going to do what so Kathryn bought some safety pins that we could use to attach on the crochet flowers and she also made some bags for the flowers. I felt so bad because they have done a lot already, all I had to do was buy some bobby pins for your hair. On tuesday, pattern cutting lesson, we learnt how to manufacture frills/gathering I though that it looked really nice so I experimented with the ones that I made and I could make a flower shape from the gathering that I learnt. After that lesson I came home and made some more of the gatherings and sewed them on a bobby pins.

Brand

I have been given a new brief 'communication through art and design' that requires researching different brands from foods to cars to clothing etc for our first task. "So I was like eerrrmm ok I know what brand is so it shouldn't be that hard" but looking at it now it is a little hard because you have to research into a brand properly and it depth. I have researched a range of brands like Kenco, Ariel, Ralph Lauren to write in my sketchbook. I have found out that there are a lot of advertisements that brands use to promote their products, such as TV advertisments, billboards, magazines, radio, sponsorships, websites, celebrity endorsements and through their packaging. I have also produced critical thinking questions to ask while analysing the different brands that I have chosen, this will help me with the next task on the brief. The next task was that I have to select 2 different brands to compare and contrast and produce a 250 written piece. I thought that this brief would be easy but its not because firstly we have to produce an advert or packaging, secondly I have pitch this advert or product to a group of people on my course which to me is scary and nerve-rocking and lastly I have to evaluate the work that I have done on my sketchbook and on the outcome.

How I made my accessory.

I have chosen which final design I am going to manufacture for my accessory. I collected a number of different materials that I could use to produce it, for example, fabrics, buttons, threads and different coloured zips. I also made some samples and experimented with the zips to achieve the outcome I wanted.
Here is how I made the accessory.
  • First I drew the shape of the petal, choosing which size I wanted.
  • Then placed it on my chosen fabric and cut it out in a petal shape.
  • After that I wanted to manipulate the fabric to alter its appearance, so I experimented, using techinques from some of the workshops which were part of the unit. I wanted to see which technique would be the most effective. The batik wax worked well, so I used the batik wax to create a shape inside the petal. When the wax had dried I coloured the the spaces with inks, then removed the wax with a hot iron.
  • I have put interfacing on the petal-shaped base fabric to maintain its shape when I attach the zips.
  • I then laid the shapes onto the fabric base, arranging them in the pattern I wanted. I then sewed a zigzag stitch along the edges with a contrasting thread.
  • I also sewed in a running stitch to outline the shape of the petal.
  • Setting the fabric to one side, I started to create different sized petals with the zips, to achieve the shape I wanted. On some of the zips I have sewn a zigzag stitch along the tape to create a texture.
  • After I had made a number of the petal zips I hand stitched them onto the fabric base that I had made previously. I also added some buttons to add more texture.

Skirt with yoke

Recently I completed a skirt with yoke during a pattern cutting lesson. Here is what the skirt looked like when it was finished.

This is the first skirt I had ever made which incorporated a yoke, so I was very pleased with the result. As I produced a manufacturing plan, I would be able to re-create this again, possibly without help!

Flora Bond

The other day when I was going through my high school stuff I came across my old art sketchbook. I was looking through the book to see if I could find something interesting which would help me in my research to add to my sketchbook for college. Eventually, I did find something interesting, the images below, but I don't know who the artist was. There was a name at the bottom of the image, so I was like, "this could be the artists name", so I looked it up and it was. Her name is Flora Bond and she makes accessories that are handmade and I thought that her work looked simple but elegant, also romantic. Here is some of her work that I found very interesting and creative.

I was inspired by her work and tried to incorporate it when I was developing my design for the accessory I intend to manufacture.
