new brief

I am super excited with this new brief that I have been given because it is the brief where I will be able to create one of my dress design from the previous brief that I had. It is not only me that are producing the dress, it is everyone on my course including the second years (2nd years will be making a collection while the 1st years make one dress outcome). This dress that I am manufacturing will be shown in a catwalk which will be held in sometime in June. We have about two months to manufacture the dress before the catwalk show, so I am pretty scared. My first task is to research illustrations and to create a colour page on my sketchbook. And then to collect 10-20 fabric swatches over the easter holidays. I have manage to produce my colour page before we broke up for the easter holidays. I am also starting with my research and planning out my layout on my sketchbook.

Colour page on my sketchbook. I have chosen vibrant colours that reflects wealth which links to the message that I am trying to convey through my dress.

So far this brief I think is exciting so watch out for my next blog update.

Inspiration

My mood board mostly conveys wealth because I mainly focused on the wealthy side of the class system. On the image above are the things that would inspire me in designing a dress. I have gathered images that represents wealth and that has a lot of shapes for my mood board. I also included some fabric that relates to wealth. I have chosen vibrant colours that represents wealth e.g. purple, blue, red, green and gold. After producing mood board, I have started to design the dresses for my final outcome. I started with a shape as my starting point and gradually developing it taking my inspiration from my research and from my mood board. Here are some of the design ideas that I have drawn on my sketchbook.

I feel that these design ideas that I have drawn are the strongest and most successful outcome.

Theme

My theme for this unit is social class or class system. My first thought was "OMG I don't know how to start my research" but I remembered that I previously had researched this topic briefly. I went on and research it more in depth. I looked at different types of class in the society and looked at social class in different country. I mainly looked at the higher class and the higher society in India for my mood board.

Shape Development

Shape development allows you to experiment ad to free your idea up. This allowed me to play around with the shape from my research and placed it on the body. At first I thought that shape development was complicated but as I got into it became more easier and natural.

This is an example of shape development in my sketchbook but it is wrong because I turned it into a garment instead of it just being a shape on a body.

Here another example from my sketchbook which is a strong shape development because I did not turn it into a garment.

Introduction to Unit 7 Design Methods in Art and Design

For this unit I have learnt what equality and diversity means. It means giving every individual the chance to fulfill their potential free from discrimination. I really enjoyed this unit because it involves experimenting, drawing and thinking about ideas to create a garment.
